Solid Lift Truck Tire Safety

More than 200 deaths each year within North America are a result of lift trucks, or forklifts. Correct maintenance and inspection of forklift tires can really help to reduce the risk of mishaps.



Pre-Work Inspection

Prior to the start of each shift, the tires on the lift truck should be inspected for signs of damage and wear. The air pressure inside the tires has to be checked to ensure the pressure is not very low. Low tire pressure could make the machine prone to tip-overs when lifting loads.



Types of Tires

The tire type of the lift truck will be based upon the type of floor surface that the lift truck will operate on. Solid rubber tires are great for indoor application. For surfaces that are smooth, tires are normally smaller. Larger pneumatic tires are best for lift trucks being used outdoors. Pneumatic tires could grip well on surfaces that are rough because they have rubber tread and are air-filled.



Other factors

Any lift truck used on a continual basis must be inspected at the completion of every shift, according to OSHA guidelines. The tires must be checked again for any sign of damage, such as cuts or wear.
