Classifications of Scissor Lifts & Aerial Lift Platforms
A scissor lift is made up of a series of crisscrossed steel arms that are connected to create an X pattern. When raised vertically, the X pattern of support holds the rectangular platform which is situated on top of the lifting mechanism. There are support railings along the edges of the lifting mechanism to be able to keep the workers safe and help to secure their tools.
Scissor lifts offer a low profile that is great for concrete, pavement and hard dirt surfaces. These machines use either a combustion engine or electric motor to be able to power the lifting apparatus and move the lift. The operator should move the lift itself if she or he needs to travel horizontally, because the lift apparatus just operates the lift in a vertical manner.
Rough Terrain Scissor Lift
The standard scissor lift and the rough terrain scissor lift utilize identical lifting technology. The key difference is that the rough terrain units feature a different base which is particularly designed for uneven surfaces. These units also offer oversized all terrain tires and higher ground clearance. The rough terrain scissor lifts use 4-wheel drive in order to easily navigate through muddy and difficult terrain.
Telescopic Boom Lift
Telescopic booms are made to be elevated both vertically and diagonally. This unit has a small work platform which houses controls in order to control the boom. The controls work with a combustion engine in order to power the hydraulics that power the boom and move the lift. The telescopic boom lift has off-road capable tires and is an independent lift unit.
Articulating Boom Lift
The articulating boom lift features 2 telescopic booms that are attached with a moving elbow mechanism. This lifting equipment has a bucket or a small work platform which is equipped with hand controls to be able to control the boom. These are stand-alone lifts that are powered by a combustion engine. Articulating boom lifts are available with either hard surface or off-road tires. These lifts are made to be able to reach over top of and on top of buildings.
Aerial Mast Lift
To be able to raise a work platform vertically into the air, the aerial mast lift uses a telescopic mast. The lift is usually powered pneumatically or electrically and are self-propelled units. These machines offer a great solution for working in high racks within narrow warehouse aisles. It is important to note that aerial mast lifts are not recommended for off-road application and are limited to vertical movement.
